A5 system
blade compatibility
cross-brand fit
buying guide
Buying the wrong blade is the single most common mistake horse owners make — and it is an expensive one when you are ordering five at a time. The good news: most of the clippers in your barn belong to the same blade family. This guide explains what the A5 system actually is, which models use it, and how to verify fit in under a minute before you spend money.
A5 is not a brand. It is a detachable blade system — a standardised set of physical dimensions: the blade's mounting rail, hinge slot, tension spring position and cutter geometry. Because those dimensions are standardised, an A5 blade from one manufacturer generally fits an A5-compatible clipper from another.
That is why a blade made for an Andis AGC will usually lock onto an Oster A5 or a Wahl KM10. It is also why the numbering system (#10, #4F, #4FW, #7F, #5F, #15, #30, #40) is shared: the number describes cutting length, and the letters describe the tooth pattern.
The practical takeaway: if two clippers both use the A5 system, blades and cutters are interchangeable. If one of them uses a proprietary system, they are not — and no adapter will fix it.
| Brand | Common A5-compatible models | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Andis | AGC, AGC2, UltraEdge, Super 2-Speed, EasyClip (some versions) | Andis's detachable animal range is built around A5. Blade tension is preset by the clipper. |
| Oster | A5, Golden A5, Turbo A5, ProMax (A5 models) | The Oster 76 series is a different system — the 76 uses its own blade type, not A5. |
| Wahl | KM2, KM5, KM10, Show Pro, Competition series | Wahl's "KM" family is the A5-compatible line. Battery-powered Mini/Super models may differ. |
| Heiniger | Saphir, Opal and other A5-compatible models | Heiniger also sells a proprietary "wide/livestock" blade range for larger machines — check the model, not the brand. |
Note that most brands also sell large-animal or livestock shears (sheep shears, cattle clippers) which use completely different, much larger blade systems. A5 is a small-animal and horse system. Always match the system, not the brand name.
| Blade | Approx. coat left | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| #40 / #30 | 0.25 – 0.5 mm | Surgical and show prep, very close work |
| #15 | ≈1.2 mm | Face, ears, close detailing |
| #10 | ≈1.5 mm | Standard show clip, full body short finish |
| #7F | ≈3.2 mm | All-round body clip with a little protection |
| #5F | ≈6.3 mm | Cooler clip, some coat retained |
| #4F / #4FW | ≈9.5 mm | Natural look, warmth retention, blending, wide-area efficiency with the W version |
Both ceramic and stainless steel top blades are available in the A5 format and both are drop-in compatible. The difference is behaviour, not fit:
A common myth is that ceramic blades need a different clipper. They do not, provided the blade is built to A5 dimensions.
If you are a dealer, groomer or brand sourcing replacement blades, model compatibility is only half the list. Verify:
If both clippers use the A5 detachable system — for example an Andis AGC and an Oster A5 or Turbo A5 — the same blade will fit both. Confirm the model, because some Oster clippers (notably the 76 series) use a different blade system.
No. A ceramic A5 blade fits any A5-compatible clipper. Ceramic refers to the top blade material, not the mounting system.
Usually tension or seating: the blade is not flush on the hinge, the cutter is not seated in the fork, or the clipper's tension spring is worn. Remove, reseat, and check the cutter alignment before assuming the blade is faulty.
Generally yes, but wide blades demand slightly more torque. On a healthy battery unit you may see marginally shorter runtime; on an ageing battery, expect it.
No. Sheep shears and cattle clippers use much larger, proprietary blade systems. A5 is a horse, pet and small-animal format.
