A5 10W Wide Blade

10W Wide Blade — 1.5mm Cut, Wider Surface, Half the Passes

In A5 blade naming there are two separate pieces of information. The number is the cutting length, and the letter after it is the format. So the 10W cuts exactly the same 1.5 mm as a standard 10# — what changes is the width of the surface doing the cutting: roughly a third more comb and cutter per pass. On a neck, a barrel or a hindquarter that difference is not cosmetic. It is the difference between a body clip that takes a morning and one that takes most of an afternoon, and between a coat with overlap marks in it and one without.

10W A5 wide horse clipper blade, 1.5mm cutting height, wide stainless steel comb with ceramic or stainless steel cutter
10W 1.5 mm wide A5 blade. Wider comb and cutter than the standard 10#, sold as a pair with a ceramic or stainless steel cutter.

What the W actually means

Dealers and buyers mix this up constantly, so it is worth stating plainly: the number sets the length, the letter sets the width. A 10W is not a longer or shorter cut than a 10# — it is the same 1.5 mm on a wider blade.

Part of the codeWhat it controls
Number (10)Cutting height — how much coat is left on the horse. 10 = 1.5 mm (1/16″).
Letter (W)Cutting format — the width of the cutting surface. W = wide: approximately 36% more width per pass than the standard blade of the same number.
Letter (F)Finish / full-tooth comb — the standard tooth pattern used for a clean finish rather than a blending or skip-tooth pattern.

That is why the FW family exists as a set of formats rather than a set of lengths: 3FW, 4FW, 5FW, 7FW and 10W are all wide versions of numbers buyers already know. One blade width does not suit every job, so the same length is offered in both formats.

Why width changes the job

  • Fewer passes, less total time under the blade. A wider surface removes more coat per stroke, so the head spends less time running over the same patch. On a full body clip that is measured in minutes saved, not seconds.
  • Less friction heat on the skin. Heat comes from the blade rubbing the same area repeatedly. Fewer repeated passes mean a cooler blade, which matters most at 1.5 mm where the comb is against the skin.
  • Fewer visible overlap lines. Clip lines come from the edge of the blade stepping across the coat. Halve the number of passes and you roughly halve the number of edges that can leave a mark.
  • Better for large flat panels. Neck, shoulder, barrel and quarters are broad and relatively flat, which is exactly the geometry a wide blade is designed for.
  • Worse in tight contours. The same width that helps on a barrel will not sit flat inside an ear, under the jaw or around a fetlock. That is a second-blade job, not a wide-blade job.

The trade-off in one line. A wide blade trades manoeuvrability for speed. Buyers who clip whole bodies want it; buyers who only tidy heads and legs do not, and are better served by the standard 10#.

Where the 10W belongs on a horse

AreaWhy the wide format works there
Neck and shoulderBroad, flat and long: full-length passes at 1.5 mm take down the coat quickly with a clean edge.
Barrel, back and flankThe largest panel on the horse — where the extra width saves the most time and produces the fewest overlap marks.
Hindquarters and thighsBig muscle groups with a smooth surface: wide passes follow the contour easily at this length.
Full show and hunter clipsThe body of a clipped-out horse at 1.5 mm, done as one continuous set of passes rather than dozens of overlapping ones.
Taking down a heavy coatUsed after a longer blade has removed the bulk, to bring the body to a uniform show finish.

Where it does not belong: faces, ears, the muzzle, under the jaw, the inside of the legs, around the knees, hocks and fetlocks, and any area with a skin fold. Those are standard-width or narrow-blade work, and forcing a wide blade into them is how nicks happen.

Where 1.5mm wide sits in the A5 system

Two axes, not one. Length decides how much coat is left; format decides how much ground is covered per pass. The 10W is the short end of the length axis combined with the wide end of the format axis:

BladeCutting heightFormatTypical job
10#1.5 mmStandard widthHead, ears, muzzle, legs, detail and pattern work
10W (this blade)1.5 mmWide (~36% wider)Body of a full show clip, large panels, faster coverage
9# / 9W2 mmStandard / wideClose finishing with half a millimetre more cover
7F / 7FW3.2 mmStandard / wideClose trimming and blending a body pass
5F / 5FW6.3 mmStandard / wideBlanket, hunter and trace clips
4F / 4FW9.5 mmStandard / wideFull body clip on horses that keep some coat
3F / 3FW13 mmStandard / wideLong clips and the first pass on heavy winter coat

The practical rule most professional clippers work to: body in wide, details in standard. Run the 10W over neck, barrel and quarters, then change to a standard 10# for the head, ears and legs, where the blade has to sit inside a contour rather than sweep across one.

Two pieces, sold as one pair

An A5 blade is a matched pair, not a single part. The lower comb guides the hair and fixes the 1.5 mm cutting height; the upper cutter oscillates across it and does the cutting. On the 10W both parts are wide. The comb is stainless steel on every pair — ground, hardened and matched to the wide cutter — and it is not a choice. The cutter is: 22-teeth stainless steel, 18-teeth ceramic or 25-teeth ceramic, all fitting the same wide comb.

Lower combWide, full-tooth stainless steel at 1.5 mm — standard on every pair
Upper cutter — stainless22 teeth: toughest edge, lowest replacement cost, best in coarse or dirty coat
Upper cutter — ceramic18 or 25 teeth: runs cooler and holds its edge longer in clean coat, which suits long body passes
Why the pair mattersA wide cutter on a standard comb, or the reverse, will not tension or cut correctly — the two parts are matched
10W A5 wide blade cutter options: 22-teeth stainless steel, 18-teeth ceramic and 25-teeth ceramic cutter
Cutter options for the 10W. 22-teeth stainless steel, 18-teeth ceramic and 25-teeth ceramic cutters — all matched to the wide 1.5 mm stainless steel comb.

Fits the A5 clipper head

The blade is machined to A5 dimensions — hinge slot, mounting rail, cutter fork and tension point — so it seats on the heads the main brands have supported for years:

  • Andis: AGC, AGC2, UltraEdge and Super 2-Speed
  • Oster: A5, Golden A5 and Turbo A5
  • Wahl: KM2, KM5, KM10 and Show Pro
  • Heiniger: A5-compatible models such as Saphir

A wide blade removes more hair per stroke, which also means more load on the motor and more demand on the tension setting. Check the head tension before a long body pass, keep the coat clean and dry, let the blade cut at its own speed instead of pushing it, and oil every ten minutes of running time. Keep the blade flat and overlap each pass by about a third of its width — a wide blade held at an angle is how a clip ends up with a washboard finish. Sample oil sachets can be packed with the blades on request.

The wider FOLK blade programme

The 10W is one blade in a range built for the three head systems distributors meet most often: the A5 platform, the A-Series for Lister-type clippers and the H-Series for Heiniger-type clippers. The wide formats are offered right across the A5 lengths — 3FW, 4FW, 5FW, 7FW and 10W — so a dealer can supply a complete body-clipping set from one supplier instead of mixing brands or formats.

All A5 clipper blades from Ningbo FOLK Tools including 10W, 40, 30, 15, 10, 9, 8.5, 7F, 7FW, 5F, 5FW, 4F, 4FW and 3F
The A5 range. Standards and wide formats side by side — shave-zone blades such as the 10# and 10W, the 9# at 2 mm, the 7F and 7FW at 3.2 mm, up to the 13 mm 3F and 3FW.
Standard horse clipper blades A-Series compatible with Lister horse clippers: A2, A22, A6 and A7
A-Series for Lister-type clippers. A2, A22, A6 and A7 models in carbon steel, ground and hardened to the same standard as the A5 line.
Standard horse clipper blades H-Series compatible with Heiniger horse clippers: H1, H3 and H6

Frequently asked questions

Is a 10W a longer cut than a 10#?

No. Both cut to 1.5 mm (1/16″). The number is the length; the W is the format. A 10W leaves exactly the same coat as a standard 10#, it just covers more of the horse per pass.

How much wider is the wide format?

Approximately 36% more cutting surface than the standard-width blade of the same number, which is what makes it the body-clipping format rather than a detail format.

Can I clip a whole horse with a 10W?

The body, yes. The head, ears, muzzle, legs and any skin folds still need a standard-width blade — a wide blade will not sit flat in those contours. Most professional kits run a 10W for the body and a standard 10# for the details.

Will a wide blade work on a small clipper?

It fits any A5 head, but a wide blade loads the motor more than a standard one. On a low-power machine it will feel slower and hotter; on a full-size A5 clipper it is the fastest way to finish a body clip.

How is the 10W supplied — a blade or a pair?

As a pair: one wide upper cutter plus one wide lower comb, packed together as a single piece. The comb is always stainless steel; the cutter is chosen in ceramic or stainless steel.

Which cutter should I choose for body work?

Ceramic for long body passes where heat builds up, and for thin-skinned horses; stainless steel for coarse or dirty coats and the lowest replacement cost. All three cutters fit the same wide 10W comb.

Will it fit my clipper?

If the clipper uses the A5 detachable system, yes. Andis AGC series, Oster A5 series, Wahl KM series and A5-compatible Heiniger models are supported. The Oster 76 series and livestock shears are not A5.

Can I order private-label packaging?

Yes. Logo on the blade, custom blister card and bulk carton are available. Minimum order is 100 pcs, with artwork approval before production.
