5F Standard-Width Blade — 6.3mm for Horse Hair Trimming
The 5F is the 6.3 mm blade of the A5 range in its standard width. Where the wide 5FW strips a body quickly, the 5F is the blade that goes where a wide comb cannot follow: the head, the ears, the bridle path, the inside of the legs and every blend line that has to look invisible. It leaves roughly six millimetres of hair, so it tidies a coat without scalping it, and it snaps onto the A5 head the customer already owns. Supplied as a complete blade, it works as a direct clippers blade replacement, and the comb and cutter are also available as separate clipper blade parts.

What the 5F is built for
Trimming is a different job from clipping. It is slower, it happens on awkward anatomy, and it is judged up close. That is exactly where a standard-width 6.3 mm blade earns its place:
- Tidy-ups between clips. Taking the top off a grown-out coat on the neck, shoulders and quarters without going back to a full clip.
- Trim clips and part clips. Legs, face, jaw, ears and the area under the belly, where a wide blade is too clumsy to control.
- Blending wide-blade work. Running the 5F over the edges left by a 5FW or 4FW body pass so the transition disappears instead of stepping.
- Feathering and finishing. Softening the hair line above the coronet, around the elbows and along the flank crease.
- Sensitive animals. A 6.3 mm cut leaves margin between the teeth and the skin, which suits thin-skinned and pink-skinned horses.
5F or 5FW? Same 6.3 mm cutting height — the difference is the width of the cutting surface. The 5F is the control blade for edges, small areas and blending; the 5FW is the coverage blade for the barrel, back and quarters. Professional kits usually carry both and swap between them mid-clip.
Standard width, and why that matters
A narrower cutting surface touches less of the horse in one pass. On flat body work that is a disadvantage; on trimming it is the whole point.

Ceramic or stainless steel cutter
The blade is supplied complete, and the cutter — the upper, moving part that does the cutting — can be ordered in either material. Both fit the same blade body, so the same comb can be sold as a complete blade or refreshed later with a replacement cutter.

Fits the A5 clipper head
The blade is built to A5 dimensions — hinge slot, mounting rail, cutter fork and tension point — so it seats on A5 clippers from the major brands. Confirmed fits include:
- Andis: AGC, AGC2, UltraEdge and Super 2-Speed
- Oster: A5, Golden A5 and Turbo A5
- Wahl: KM2, KM5, KM10 and Show Pro
- Heiniger: A5-compatible models such as Saphir
The Oster 76 series and livestock shears use a different, larger blade system and are not A5. For a tight finish on the muzzle, the ears or the coronet band, step down to a narrower #10 or #15 blade; a 6.3 mm blade tidies, it does not shave.
Where the 5F sits in the A5 range
The A5 programme runs from 0.25 mm show blades up to 13 mm coat-left-on blades, and every length is available in a standard and, for the body lengths, a wide version. A dealer can stock one platform and cover trimming, body clipping and winter work without changing the machine.
