What Is a 4FW Clipper Blade? 9.5 mm Wide Blade Explained

The 4FW clipper blade is the wide version of the familiar 9.5 mm A5 blade: same cutting length as a 4F, but with a cutting surface that is 36% wider. That single change is why the 4FW removes a full body clip in fewer passes, runs cooler on big flat areas and leaves fewer overlap marks. This guide explains exactly what the letters and numbers mean, what the blade does on a horse, and where it should stay in the box.

If you are a horse owner choosing a blade, a groom building a clipping kit, or a distributor deciding what to stock next to the standard blade, the useful question is not “is wider better?” It is “where is wider better, and where is it a liability?” The answer is fairly consistent once you break the blade down into its three parts.

What does “4FW” actually mean?

The name is a specification, not marketing. Read it in three pieces:

  • 4 — the A5 blade family that leaves 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) of coat. It sits at the long end of the common A5 range: mid-length blades such as a #5 (6.3 mm) and #7 (3.2 mm) are shorter, and a #10 (1.5 mm) is much shorter.
  • F — full tooth. Every tooth position is present, so the blade cuts an even surface instead of leaving the open tracks a skip-tooth blade produces. The standard-width version of the same blade is the 4F 9.5 mm A5 blade.
  • W — wide. The cutting surface is 36% wider than the standard 4F. The cutting length does not change: both blades leave the same 9.5 mm of coat.

The blade body is A5 detachable, so it clicks onto the A5 clipper head used by Andis, Oster, Wahl and Heiniger machines. The cutter is available in stainless steel or ceramic and is a replaceable part on the same blade body, which matters for anyone maintaining a fleet of blades rather than buying complete units every season.

The 9.5 mm cutting length: what it leaves on the horse

Cutting length is the part buyers underestimate. A 9.5 mm blade does not produce a show-slick finish; it leaves roughly a centimetre of coat. That is deliberate, and it changes the jobs the blade is good for:

  • Warmth is retained. A 9.5 mm coat keeps a clipped horse comfortable in cool weather, which is why this length is standard for late-autumn and winter clipping.
  • Skin is protected. Pink-skinned and thin-skinned horses, and horses living out in daylight, keep real sun protection at this length.
  • Clip lines blend away. Because the blade leaves coat instead of scalping it, it softens the transition between a short body clip and longer hair left on the legs.
  • It is forgiving. A longer cut hides small hand errors that a 1.5 mm blade would turn into a visible line.

In other words, the 4FW is not a finishing blade for a hunter show clip. It is a working blade for a natural, blended, protected clip — and the wide format simply makes that job faster.

What the 36% wider cutting surface actually changes

A 36% wider path means each pass covers roughly a third more skin. Over the same body area that removes about one pass in four. Three things follow:

  • Less time on the horse. The neck, shoulder, barrel and hindquarters are large, relatively flat surfaces, and they are where the wide blade earns its price.
  • Less friction and heat. Fewer overlapping passes mean less dragging of a warm blade over the same patch, which is the main cause of clipper burn on sensitive horses.
  • Fewer overlap marks. Every overlap is a chance to leave a line. A wider blade reduces the number of overlaps by design.

The trade-off is control. A wide blade is harder to keep flat on curved, bony or folded areas. It also puts slightly more load on the clipper, so a sharp cutter and correct blade tension matter more, not less. A wide blade does not fix a dull cutter — it amplifies the problem across a wider strip of skin.

4FW vs 4F: same length, different job

These two blades are not rivals; they are a pair. The comparison below is the one worth putting in front of a customer who asks why the wide version costs more.

The practical workflow for most professional grooms is a two-blade kit: run the 4FW across the open body, then switch to the 4F for legs, edges and the blend line. Because both cut at 9.5 mm, the finish stays consistent — you change speed and control, not the length of the coat.

Where the wide blade works — and where it does not

The 4FW is at its best on large, relatively flat surfaces: the neck, chest, shoulders, barrel, back, hindquarters and the thighs. It also handles feathered legs efficiently, because the wide surface catches a lot of hair in one pass.

It is the wrong tool for tight, bony or folded geometry. Switch to a narrower #10 or #15 for the face, ears, bridle path, elbows, the inside of the front legs, the groin and the coronet band. A wide blade cannot conform to those shapes, and forcing it there is how cuts and nicks happen.

Rule of thumb for staff and customers: wide blade for the field, standard blade for the edges, narrow blade for the detail. If a clip needs a hard, short finish rather than a blended 9.5 mm finish, the right answer is a #10 — not a wide version of a longer blade.

Ceramic or stainless steel cutter?

Both cutters fit the same 4FW blade body and both can be bought as replacement parts, so the choice is about workload rather than compatibility.

CutterBest forTrade-off
CeramicLong sessions, warm weather, multiple horses in a dayRuns cooler and holds its edge longer, but is more brittle if dropped
Stainless steelDense, coarse or dirty winter coats; farm and stud useTougher and more economical, but runs warmer and needs more frequent oiling

For a sensitive horse or a full body clip in summer, ceramic is usually the better sell. For a muddy winter coat on a working farm, steel is the pragmatic one. Offering both as spare cutters is also the easiest way to turn a one-off blade sale into a repeat parts customer.

Who should stock the 4FW?

The 4FW sells best to three groups: tack shops and equestrian retailers building a blade wall, grooming businesses that clip several horses a week, and distributors or private-label brands sourcing an A5 range. Its commercial logic is that it is an upgrade, not a replacement — most buyers still need the standard 4F for edges, so the two blades sell together.

For trade buyers, the supply details matter as much as the cutting length: minimum order 100 sets, supply capacity of 1,000 sets per 45 days, 100 pieces per carton at 38×23×27 cm and 11/12 kg, with certification covering ISO, BSCI, GS, CE, CB, ROHS, UL and ETL. Logo, blister card and bulk packing options make it straightforward to build a private-label pair around the 4F and 4FW.

How to check a 4FW blade before you buy

Wide blades are less tolerant of manufacturing variation, so a short inspection protects both margin and reputation:

  1. Tooth line. Every tooth present, even height, no chipped or hooked tips. A single low tooth leaves a track.
  2. Flatness. Lay the blade on a straight edge. A warped blade rocks and will cut unevenly no matter how skilled the groom is.
  3. Cutter seating. The ceramic or steel cutter should sit flush with no rocking when the tension is set.
  4. A5 interface. The hinge and tongue should engage the clipper head without force and lock without play.
  5. Marking and packing. Model 4FW, 9.5 mm cutting length, cutter material and blade system should be stated on the product and the carton.

A five-minute test clip on a spare hide or a quiet horse is worth more than any specification sheet: it confirms the blade runs cool, cuts without pulling and leaves an even 9.5 mm surface.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4FW the same as a #4 blade?

It shares the #4 family cutting length of 9.5 mm, but the 4FW has a cutting surface 36% wider than the standard 4F. The finish length is the same; the speed and the number of passes are not.

Is a wider blade better for beginners?

On large flat areas, yes — fewer passes means less chance of overlap lines. On legs, faces and tight skin folds it is harder to control, so beginners should finish those areas with the standard 4F or a narrower blade.

Can I use a 4FW for a full body clip?

Yes, if a 9.5 mm finish is what you want. It is efficient for a natural, blended full clip. If the horse needs a short show finish, use a #10 (1.5 mm) instead.

Will a wide blade make my clipper work harder?

It loads the motor slightly more because it cuts a wider strip. Keep the cutter sharp, set the tension correctly and let the blade do the work instead of pushing.

Does the 4FW fit Andis, Oster, Wahl and Heiniger clippers?

Yes. It is an A5 detachable blade and fits the A5 clipper heads used by those brands. Always confirm the machine is an A5 system rather than a proprietary head.

Can a wide blade leave lines?

Any blade can if it is tipped or dragged. The 4FW reduces overlap marks because it needs fewer passes. Keep the blade flat, move steadily and blend the boundary with the standard 4F.

Build the pair, not just the blade
