buying guide

Buying the wrong blade is the single most common mistake horse owners make — and it is an expensive one when you are ordering five at a time. The good news: most of the clippers in your barn belong to the same blade family. This guide explains what the A5 system actually is, which models use it, and how to verify fit in under a minute before you spend money.

What "A5" actually refers to

A5 is not a brand. It is a detachable blade system — a standardised set of physical dimensions: the blade's mounting rail, hinge slot, tension spring position and cutter geometry. Because those dimensions are standardised, an A5 blade from one manufacturer generally fits an A5-compatible clipper from another.

That is why a blade made for an Andis AGC will usually lock onto an Oster A5 or a Wahl KM10. It is also why the numbering system (#10, #4F, #4FW, #7F, #5F, #15, #30, #40) is shared: the number describes cutting length, and the letters describe the tooth pattern.

The practical takeaway: if two clippers both use the A5 system, blades and cutters are interchangeable. If one of them uses a proprietary system, they are not — and no adapter will fix it.

Quick reference: which clippers use A5 blades

BrandCommon A5-compatible modelsNotes
AndisAGC, AGC2, UltraEdge, Super 2-Speed, EasyClip (some versions)Andis's detachable animal range is built around A5. Blade tension is preset by the clipper.
OsterA5, Golden A5, Turbo A5, ProMax (A5 models)The Oster 76 series is a different system — the 76 uses its own blade type, not A5.
WahlKM2, KM5, KM10, Show Pro, Competition seriesWahl's "KM" family is the A5-compatible line. Battery-powered Mini/Super models may differ.
HeinigerSaphir, Opal and other A5-compatible modelsHeiniger also sells a proprietary "wide/livestock" blade range for larger machines — check the model, not the brand.

Note that most brands also sell large-animal or livestock shears (sheep shears, cattle clippers) which use completely different, much larger blade systems. A5 is a small-animal and horse system. Always match the system, not the brand name.

The four things that must match

  1. Mounting system. A5 hinge and rail geometry — this is the make-or-break point. A blade that will not seat flat against the clipper head will chatter, heat up and cut badly.
  2. Cutter style. Most A5 blades use a standard flat cutter driven by the clipper's fork. Some clippers need a specific cutter thickness or spring. If the cutter does not sit in the fork cleanly, you have the wrong combination.
  3. Tension. A5 blades are held by the clipper's own spring tension. Wear, incorrect reassembly or mismatched cutter thickness all show up as chatter, lines or the blade refusing to cut.
  4. Blade width versus clipper power. A wide blade such as a 4FW draws marginally more motor load. On a healthy AC clipper this is irrelevant; on a tired battery unit it can be noticeable.

A5 blade anatomy: hinge slot, comb teeth, cutter and tension point — the four features that must match your clipper for the blade to seat, cut cleanly and run cool.

How to verify fit in under a minute

  • Read the model plate on the clipper body — not the box, which may be a bundle. Search the exact model and confirm "A5 blade system".
  • Look at the blade you are replacing. A5 blades are roughly palm-sized, with a visible hinge slot and a two-screw top blade. If your current blade is much larger with a heavy comb, you are on a livestock system.
  • Check the tooth pattern letters. F = full tooth (smooth finish), skip tooth = faster feed with more visible line. W = wide version of the same number.
  • Test-seat the blade before clipping. Snap it on, run the clipper for ten seconds. Any rattle, smell of hot metal or squeal means the fit is wrong — stop.

Cutting length cheat sheet (A5 numbers)

BladeApprox. coat leftTypical use
#40 / #300.25 – 0.5 mmSurgical and show prep, very close work
#15≈1.2 mmFace, ears, close detailing
#10≈1.5 mmStandard show clip, full body short finish
#7F≈3.2 mmAll-round body clip with a little protection
#5F≈6.3 mmCooler clip, some coat retained
#4F / #4FW≈9.5 mmNatural look, warmth retention, blending, wide-area efficiency with the W version

Cutting length cheat sheet: the #4F and #4FW both leave 9.5mm of coat — choose between them by area size, not by finish length.

Ceramic or stainless steel cutter — a compatibility point people miss

Both ceramic and stainless steel top blades are available in the A5 format and both are drop-in compatible. The difference is behaviour, not fit:

  • Ceramic: runs cooler, stays sharp longer, ideal for long clipping sessions and for wide blades that contact a lot of skin at once. More brittle if dropped.
  • Stainless steel: tougher, shatter-resistant, better with coarse or dirty coats and heavier farm use.

A common myth is that ceramic blades need a different clipper. They do not, provided the blade is built to A5 dimensions.

Buying in bulk: what to check before a wholesale order

If you are a dealer, groomer or brand sourcing replacement blades, model compatibility is only half the list. Verify:

  1. Stated system: the supplier should name the A5 system explicitly, not just "fits most clippers".
  2. Cutter tolerance: ask for the flatness and tooth-grind tolerance. This is what separates a blade that lasts a season from one that lasts three horses.
  3. Material spec: steel grade and heat treatment for the bottom blade, and whether the top blade is ceramic or steel.
  4. Consistency across batches: ask for a sample from production, not a hand-finished prototype.
  5. Packaging and OEM: retail-ready blister or bulk carton, and whether your logo can be applied.
  6. Spare parts availability: cutters and springs sold separately, so your customers can refresh rather than replace.

Frequently asked questions

Will an A5 blade fit both my Andis and my Oster?

If both clippers use the A5 detachable system — for example an Andis AGC and an Oster A5 or Turbo A5 — the same blade will fit both. Confirm the model, because some Oster clippers (notably the 76 series) use a different blade system.

Do ceramic blades require a special clipper?

No. A ceramic A5 blade fits any A5-compatible clipper. Ceramic refers to the top blade material, not the mounting system.

Why does my new blade chatter or refuse to cut?

Usually tension or seating: the blade is not flush on the hinge, the cutter is not seated in the fork, or the clipper's tension spring is worn. Remove, reseat, and check the cutter alignment before assuming the blade is faulty.

Can I use a wide blade on a battery clipper?

Generally yes, but wide blades demand slightly more torque. On a healthy battery unit you may see marginally shorter runtime; on an ageing battery, expect it.

Are A5 blades interchangeable with sheep shears?

No. Sheep shears and cattle clippers use much larger, proprietary blade systems. A5 is a horse, pet and small-animal format.
